 I developed these to transport train axles on flatbed trailers using a forklift only to reduce handling time.  Instead of slinging axles to the side of the rail then fork-lifting them onto old wooden pallets they can be dropped directly into these robust cradles, kept in order, and placed directly on a lowboy.  They also allows axle wheel flanges to be measured without impediments.  The Delrin surfaces protect the paint from abrasion and the cammed hold downs ensure the axles stay in place during transport.
