This auxiliary fan was created to cool DMU compact converters. The converters are liquid cooled that dissipate heat through large radiators. The radiators have air drawn through via large mechanical fans directly mounted to the main diesel engines. Much of the vehicles maintenance is performed while the engines are off but the electrical systems are still active. This has lead to overheating of the compact converters creating very expensive failures. This fan can be slid into channels mounted on the the vehicles fan shroud. The strobe light reminds maintenance that the fan is in position and the shop power is connected.
